CONSULTING FIRMS CO-FOUND WEF’S RACIAL JUSTICE BUSINESS FORUM: The World Economic Forum has launched ‘Partnering for Racial Justice in Business’, a global initiative that brings leading responsible companies together with the aim of promoting the diversity and inclusion of people from all racial backgrounds. Despite all the progress made on diversity & inclusion in recent years, there still is a long way to go for parity in the workplace. While most attention in media and business goes to the position of under-represented groups such as woman and LGBTs, the topic of racial justice – quality for people of all racial and ethnic identities – is another key pillar of the diversity and inclusion agenda.

ETHNIC MINORITY FIRMS EXCEL ‘AGAINST THE ODDS’ IN THE UK: Ethnic minority entrepreneurs succeed “against the odds” in Britain, performing strongly in tech, innovation and in efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic, found a first-of-its-kind study seeking to address racial inequalities in business.
The British government does not collect ethnicity data when entrepreneurs register a company, although calls to address unequal representation and pay are growing following last year’s Black Lives Matter movement.
Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) people own about 16% of British firms, although they only account for 14% of the population, found the analysis by Open Political Economy Network (OPEN), a think-tank focused on diversity issues.

ARIEL ALTERNATIVES’ PROJECT BLACK AIMS TO SCALE SUSTAINABLE MINORITY-OWNED BUSINESSES AND CLOSE THE RACIAL WEALTH GAP: Ariel Investments, LLC (“Ariel”) today announced the launch of Ariel Alternatives, LLC (“Ariel Alternatives” or the “firm”), a private asset management firm. This announcement marks Ariel Investments’ first foray into the private investment sphere in its 38-year history.
Ariel Alternatives’ initial strategic initiative (“Project Black” or “the initiative”) will have a mission to scale sustainable minority-owned businesses. Through this effort, Ariel Alternatives intends to invest in middle-market companies that are not currently minority owned, transforming these entities into certified minority business enterprises, as well as existing Black and Latinx-owned businesses.

AT&T EXCEEDS $3 BILLION SPENDING COMMITMENT TO BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES: AT&T spent $3.1 billion with Black-owned suppliers, surpassing a $3 billion two-year commitment to drive diversity and inclusion across our business and communities where we live and work.
It was our largest commitment made with Black-owned suppliers since we launched our Supplier Diversity efforts in 1968 as a response to the civil unrest and economic disparities many diverse businesses were encountering.

FEDEX IS COMMITTING $5 MILLION TO AREA HBCUs: FedEx has pledged to commit $5 million total to four historically Black colleges and universities in Tennessee and Mississippi. The HBCUs involved are: LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis; Tennessee State University in Nashville; Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi; and Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Mississippi.

HCA BUYING MAJORITY OF BROOKDALE HOME HEALTH UNIT – $400 MILLION CASH DEAL EXPECTED TO CLOSE AROUND MID-YEAR: THCA Healthcare executives have agreed to pay $400 million for 80 percent of Brookdale Health Care Services, the Brentwood-based company’s home health and outpatient therapy division. Brookdale Health Care Services is the country’s seventh-largest home health business, comprising 57 home health agencies and 22 hospice agencies in 26 states as well as 84 outpatient therapy locations.

BROWN-FORMAN TO DOUBLE CAPACITY AT SHIVELY DISTILLERY, ESTABLISH NURSERY IN
$95 MILLION EXPANSION: Brown-Forman announced it will double the capacity of its distillery off Dixie Highway. The expansion comes with an estimated $95 million price tag and will take more than two years to complete, according to a news release. “The demand for American whiskey worldwide is a result of the craftsmanship and specialness of Kentucky’s signature spirit,” Alex Alvarez, Brown-Forman’s chief production and sustainability officer, said in a statement.

STRENGTHENING THE TALENT PIPELINE – PROGRAMS AIM TO INCREASE POOL OF SKILLED WORKERS TO MEET CURRENT, FUTURE DEMAND: Many large employers in the region say one of their biggest challenges is keeping up with workforce needs – from entry level to management positions in manufacturing and logistics across a range of industries. “We have become the mega logistics/ fulfillment and supply chain epicenter,” said Paul Verst, chairman and CEO of Verst Logistics in Walton, Ky.

TOYOTA INVESTING $210 MILLION IN WEST VIRGINIA EXPANSION: Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia (TMMWV) will invest $210 million at its Buffalo, WV operations to help meet customer demand. The project will add 100 new jobs to increase assembly capacity of its four-cylinder engine line. Once complete, TMMWV’s total investment will be more than $1.8 billion and total employment will exceed 2,000.“Today’s announcement represents Toyota’s continued commitment to our customers as well as our community,” said TMMWV President Srini Matam.
